“A” is used when talking about any unspecific thing that is not one of a kind. “The” is used when talking about a specific thing in which only one exists.
Examples:
1) The Earth is round.
2) The Russian flag is cool.
3) A car is made out of metal.
4) A tree is green.
5) A person is coming.

If I say “We read the book” I am talking about a specific book. If I say “We read a book” I could be talking about any book (unspecific).
