Question about English (US)

What is the difference between "distinguish" and "distinguish between"? Such as in this sentence "Anthropologists have used these obvious differences to distinguish races, in an effort to catalog human variation. "
I look in the dictionary, the common use is "distinguish between". So What is the difference if we write the sentence as "… to distinguish between races…"?
