Good question.
LITTLE, the opposite of A LOT, can refer to the physical size of something or a person when describing them/it. It can even refer to a SHORT amount of time.
"He's very strong even though he is such a LITTLE (short) guy."
"I just want a LITTLE (small) piece of cake"
"It's such a LITTLE (small, not much) thing to ask."
BIT can also mean SMALL, usually a small piece or quantity of something. It can also refer to time, or your contribution, responsibilty, to something.
"Do you want cake?"
"I'll have just a BIT (small piece)."
"That's a BIT (too much) more than I wanted."
When referring to a contribution you've made to a group or activity. The role you played, your promised obligation:
"I've done my BIT (the effort you made)."
BIT and LITTLE are often used together.
For example, when trabelong in a car and someone asks:
"Are we almost there yet?"
The response could be:
"Almost. We'll be there in a LITTLE BIT(short amount of time)."
"Do you want more to drink?"
"Just a LITTLE BUT more (a small quantity)."
BIT is also the past tense of BITE, referring to biting something.
"Yesterday, I was BIT by a dog."
Hope this helps.
