Yes, "had better" is better in this situation. "had better" is stronger than "should". "should" is not strong enough here.

Either one works just fine. "Had better" is almost threatening in this example. Or a very strong warning.
HAD BETTER is used in many different situations.
"He HAD BETTER watch what he says to her or he'll get in trouble."
