@U-co A server “serves” you your food (and also takes away the plate), it is exactly how it sounds. A waiter/waitress also serves your food, and takes away the plate. The only difference is that a server is more gender-neutral, and is not restricted to only men or only women. A waiter/waitress is very specific (given the -er or the -ess added to the end) to a gender.

Thank you for your answer.
Which one is more common to be used?
Which one is more common to be used?

@U-co From what I’ve seen, people more commonly use “server” compared to “waiter/waitress”. Most people I know just say “the lady” or “the man”, but when I go to restaurants they often use “server” instead.

I see.
How about actress and actor?
Is there a gender-neutral word for them?

@U-co As far as I know, there isn’t a gender-neutral word for them, but I do know that many people call themselves actors regardless of their gender. I think within that field there isn’t much speculation about whether there should be titles divided by gender or if everyone should go by the same term.
