1) Uncomfortably quiet. Nothing going on but not mentally peaceful.
2) The mother is walking/moving room to room peacefully/calmly. "Acknowledging my presence" could be something like looking the person in their eyes, giving them a nod, saying hello.
3) She wasn't interested in the fact that the person is not attending senior prom. A passing remark could be something like "I'm sorry to hear that".

@Yuni822
1) “For the last months I lived at home, it was so quiet that it was stressful.”
in this sentence, “fraught” means stressful or worrying.
2) “My mother would walk around the house aimlessly. She would notice I was in the room, but she wouldn’t pay much attention to me.”
3) “When I decided not to go to senior prom, she didn’t seem to care.”
When someone “offers a passing remark,” they are saying something without much thought, or without a deeper meaning.

@Michael_Glynn Might help to think of it in the context of movies. Films have a film score which is the audio experience of the movie.
In her first example I believe it is being used in a similar way.
