@branduhn “Tux” is more common, but I doubt people always say it.

@bsloan7 So people still say “tuxedo” sometimes in daily conversation, right?
Also, I heard that tuxes are far less common than suits when men attend formal settings. Is that true?

@branduhn It just depends on how formal the occasion is. Most formal occasions do not require tuxes, no. But black-tie events always require tuxes.

@bsloan7 What are black-tie events? Events that requires men to wear a black tie? I guess that term covers funerals.
- English (US)
@branduhn No, you should never wear a tuxedo to a funeral in the US. I don’t know what the dress code is in other countries.
I’m not sure where the word “black-tie” comes from. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s referring to black *bow ties* specifically since those are worn with tuxedos. Examples of black tie events are galas, charity balls, award ceremonies, and weddings that take place in the evening.

@bsloan7 Take place in the evening? What about a wedding takes place at noon or during the day? Is it a black tie one?
- English (US)
@branduhn No, black-tie pretty much equates to evening wear. And I think I read somewhere that tuxedos shouldn’t be worn before 6 pm.

@bsloan7 Thank you. If I cut out “for”, would the sentence still sound natural?
Chinese people generally think it’s bad to sleep around, especially women.

@branduhn That changes the meaning. Now you’re saying Chinese women especially think it’s bad to sleep around.

@branduhn I think making it plural is better because there really are multiple double standards when it comes to people sleeping around.

@bsloan7 Why are there multiple double standards? There’s only one, in my opinion. Everyone in this planet kind of thinks it’s morally bad to sleep around, but if men do so, it’s not so bad. If women do so, it’s really bad. Maybe what I said is a bit exaggerated, but people around the world kind of have the same double standard about that.
