That depends on the person.
If the person is levelheaded and slow to leap to conclusions, it means that he or she heard a noise that he or she cannot identify at that time. He or she will wait until the sound comes again.
If the person is flighty or nervous, you should expect that he or she is overreacting, and you should not be alarmed, until you check out the sound for yourself.
