Act and action can both be used as NOUN or VERB.

To put it simply,

ACT- What was done.
ACTION - The process of how the act was done.


ACT (when used as a noun) - the result of an action.

Example: The magician's act was very cool!

ACT (when used as a verb) - to behave or do something.

Example: That man over there is acting strange. He's laughing and talking to himself.

ACTION (when used as a noun) - the process of an act

Example: "I'm going to teach you how to dance. Please follow my actions carefully."

ACTION (when used as a verb) - to act on something (usually a request or order)

Example: I'm sorry. I had no time to action your email.

It's okay if you don't use action as a verb. Not many people use it as a verb, too!
