No major difference, they are used interchangeably, but in the second sentence, we would add "already" to the end.

@emtrivoli @Kerryvan Btw, is it true that in AE you often use the simple past to give news, whereas in BE they use the present perfect like in that example? More examples:
I just went home.
Did you see?
I lost money.
Did you have dinner already?
I didn't call her yet.
If so, do you ever use the Present Prefect to give news? If so, what situations is it necessary in?

I'm sorry... I don't know the names of the tenses, i only know what 'sounds right', in american english. everything you wrote above, sounds fine to me.
(exception: the dinner example. it's not wrong, but I would say: Did you have dinner YET?)
