Both mean the same thing if used correctly! For exemple "I'm so hungry" "I'm very hungry" same meaning.

very → とても（少し文語的な響き）
※ really → めっちゃ（very と同じ意味で使うと口語的な言い方）
【soについて】
元々は、例えば so hot that it could melt the pavement（熱すぎて道の舗装も溶かせちゃう） とか、 so tall that you need a satellite to see the top （高すぎて衛星なしではてっぺんが見えない）など、「結果」が伴う表現です。
話し言葉ではたまに、so hot とか so tall などにとどめて言うこともありますが、これは「熱すぎて...!」と感動のあまりその結果の言葉に詰まったような印象になります。
