Both mean the same thing if used correctly! For exemple "I'm so hungry" "I'm very hungry" same meaning.

very → とても(少し文語的な響き)
※ really → めっちゃ(very と同じ意味で使うと口語的な言い方)
【soについて】
元々は、例えば so hot that it could melt the pavement(熱すぎて道の舗装も溶かせちゃう) とか、 so tall that you need a satellite to see the top (高すぎて衛星なしではてっぺんが見えない)など、「結果」が伴う表現です。
話し言葉ではたまに、so hot とか so tall などにとどめて言うこともありますが、これは「熱すぎて...!」と感動のあまりその結果の言葉に詰まったような印象になります。
