in the USA we say shrimp.
in Australia they say prawn.
as far as I know, they are the same animal.

They are the same thing!
Prawn is used in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
Shrimp is used in the US and Canada!

Technically, they are different species, but they are often mixed up.
In some countries shrimps refer to smaller animals and prawns - to the larger ones. But as others have said, some countries would stick to one term or another.

@shrimpetkin As an Australian myself, I will answer that one for you!
That commercial was part of a campaign to get US tourists to come to Australia. Because they use "shrimp" in the US, they decided to say "shrimp on the barbie" to appeal to them, but we definitely say "prawn" here.

@Natitan What commercial are you referring to? I think I first heard it in a late 80s movie (delivered with a fake Australian accent and clearly as a cliche phrase).
