Question about English (US)

How do you say this in English (US)? 彼女は子供を認可保育園に入れられなかったので、認可外保育園に預けなければならなかった。

Something like "She couldn't enroll her child in a licensed daycare, so she had to enroll them in an unlicensed one"?
(I used "them" because I don't know if her child is a boy or a girl.)

Native English speakers only :)
