In general, I think your original sentence is probably fine to use with elders. If you want to make it sound more polite, I guess you could say:
"If you'd like to say "~~~", you could say "----"."
or
"If you'd like to say "~~~", you might say "----"."
These options are pretty much the same level of politness/formality as your original sentence, maybe just slightly more polite.
