Hardly is not often used and can sound less educated in some areas of the United States.
“I barely had money last week.” or “I barely had enough money last week.”
“I can rarely eat anything when I am sick.”
“People rarely talk to me when I am there.”

Do not be concerned! Most Americans would know that you are learning the language and would not view you as uneducated 😊
Barely is often used with money, distance, amount.
“My daughter is 2 years old and barely has any hair.”
“My car is big and barely fits in the parking space.”
Rarely is often used with actions like talking, exercising.
“My doctor said I need to be healthier, but I rarely exercise.”
“In a group of people, I get nervous and rarely talk.”
In many situations the words are used in the same way.
