A wood is typically smaller than a forest, sometimes with smaller trees.
Wood can also refer to the actual stuff that trees are made of, that is often made into furniture etc.
I went to the local wood to see if I could see any badgers.
I'm taking a trip to Sherwood Forest to go on a long tramp.
I made a table out of wood.

@PolishIsThatHard Yes, we do say that. Probably more often. But, we do also say 'wood' in this context.
