Yes it's disrespectful because of that reason. Don't point with your chopsticks or treat them like a toy. It's rude to eat directly from shared dishes with them. You ought to transfer the food to your plate first. When you're not using them to eat for a long period of time use the chopstick rest. If you are given disposable chopsticks with no rest then you can fold up the paper sleeve to make one. Finally don't like your chopsticks. That's about as much as I can remember right now.

At funerals, a bowl of rice is placed with chopsticks sticking out of it. Because of this, it's taboo to do it in daily life.

@NaijaOtaku Related to this, the bones of the cremated at a funeral are passed from one person's chopsticks to the next to be placed into a receptacle; because of this, it's taboo to pass food from one person's chopsticks to another. Instead, when sharing food, place it on the other person's plate.

When you want share/pass food with/to others using your chopsticks, you can use the opposite edges that aren't putted into your mouth.
Place the thick side on one's dominant hand(usually right) side and the thin side to opposite side(left).
