Australians are only really being more aware of skin cancers in recent years. So we may not use a umbrella. But I know myself I use a lot of sunscreen. I also buy makeup with Sun Protection in it. To prevent Sun damaged. Hope this helps.

It's too awkward to carry a parasol all the time. It's easier to wear a hat and sunnies. sunscreen is drilled into Australians from the day they are born so most people use it a lot daily :)

We don't use Umbrellas in the Southen half of the country because the the weather often changes very quickly, there.
In the top half, it is warm most of the time, so we just have to get used to it.

I think the reason why people in Asia use an umbrella in summer is not always just to protect their skin so they don't get skin cancer. Of course this is a reason, but I know my friends in Asia also do it so they do not get tanned or dark skin as they want to stay white.
In Australia to protect ourselves from sun damage we wear sunscreen, hats etc as other people have said.
But in regards to Asia's view of white being beautiful lots of people think the opposite here. Having really pale skin looks sickly to us and is not attractive. We do like a bit of a tan. So in that regard we don't use an umbrella to stay white.
However, of course we know that sun damage is very prevalent in Australia.

@harkbel hahaha yea I agree....almost all of my friends are afraid to get brown skin.. and they use whitening products - pills, lotion , injections and what not..they are obsessed to look pale lol

@richells Oh... people still find them attractive. I just mean that when people are too white sometimes we think they look sick. So even though we know the sun is bad for us, many people like to get a little bit of a tan. it makes them look like they have a 'healthy glow'.
just like how there are whitening products, we have fake tan in bottles that people put on to make them a bit darker. I have never used fake tan, but it just shows the difference in the beauty standards.
Some women also think if you have a tan that you look slimmer.

I try my best to always wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses especially in the summer. But I always see people at the beach tanning and I'll come back to school after the summer holidays and everyone is burnt to a crisp. It really makes me shake my head that they risk getting skin cancer for the sake of beauty standards. I personally think clear pale skin is very beautiful but it's hard to avoid being tanned in Australia. The reason I wouldn't carry an umbrella around is because it's just too much of a hassle, in summer I stay out of the sun and when I'm at the beach I'm either swimming or sitting in the shade. We always say wear sunscreen and a hat here in Australia but never talk about umbrellas so it would look odd to see somebody walking around with an umbrella when it isn't raining. I would be embarrassed to be honest ☺️😬

Not everywhere in the world, you'll find people using an umbrella when it's hot. In America, people just wear shorts, have sandals, and short-sleves in hot weather. Australians are like Americans when they react to hot weather. Skin cancer can be common in Australia, but they just have sun screen to protect them.

Tanned skin is considered beautiful in Australia so if you use an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun people still stare and find it strange. I'm naturally very pale and I hate that people constantly make comments about how I should get a tan 😭
