Well, stato is a "participio passato" so it is always used with the verb "essere" (to be).
It can form all the composed times (tempi composti):
Passato prossimo. It's used to express something in a near past.
Sono stato a casa
I've been at home
Or
Sono stato a casa ieri
I was at home yesterday
Trapassato prossimo. It's used to express a continued action that now is ended.
Ero stato male in quel periodo
I had been sick in that period
Trapassato remoto. A very very remote past (it's not common, don't use it ahah)
Io fui stato in Francia 50 anni fa.
I've been in France 50 years ago
Futuro anteriore
Sarò stato a casa a quel punto
I'll be at home at that point
There are others "tempi composti", go check them on internet.
