It really means the same thing however don't say "were a kid" it's just not said very often.

"If he were" is called the "subjunctive mood". It's used in statements that don't describe known objective facts - for example, one's state of mind, opinion, belief, purpose, intention, desire, or - as in this case - hypotheticals, especially if they're contrary to fact.
Honestly to me, "If he were" sounds more correct than "If he was", but maybe that's just down to differences in dialect. Or preference? Not sure.
