"un/una" is like "a/an": a car. an elephant... "la/el" is the same as "the": the car, the elephant.

Here we differentiate between feminine and masculine nouns. Una and La are for feminine nous, Un and El are for masculine.

They are "determinant" articles used to denote the gender and number of a noun, and also to denote whether what is being said is something unknown ("un libro") or known ("el libro") either own or common:
Un - is used for masculine nouns and singular at the same time: for example: "un perro" or "un acuario" (a dog; an aquarium)
Una - is used for feminine nouns and singular at the same time: for example: "una mariposa" or "una casa" (a butterfly; a house)
["el" and "la" are never used with proper nouns.]
La: is for feminine nouns and singular at the same time: for example "la bandera" or "la amiga de..." (the flag; the friend of ...).
El - is used for masculine nouns and singular at the same time: "el avión" or "el libro" (the airplane; the book).
