The first one is correct and more natural because the second one needs an 'an' in the front. (Ex. An increase of CO2)
Then, both of these are correct and are more natural than the other based on content.
1. There has been an increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
2. There has been an increase in CO2 in the previous years.
