Pastel y torta son palabras relacionadas que pueden significar o no lo mismo, dependiendo de la región en que te encuentres. En España y en algunos otros países de Latinoamérica, "torta" significa "cake", mientras que en México "cake" es "pastel". Hay otras palabras relacionadas pero que cambian de significado por región como bizcocho, pay, bocadillo, etc. Esto genera bastante confusión entre hispanohablantes. En México, es seguro que si dices "torta" crean que te refieres a un tipo de sándwich popular en todo el país (el que @Juancho mencionó), pero en realidad nadie los llama o reconoce como sándwich, sólo "torta".
