It's the same. You write "ed" before words with a vowel as first letter, and "e" before words with a consonant as first letter.
Mosche ed api (flies and bees)
Cane e gatto (dog and cat).
When we talk we tend to say only "e".

You say "ed" when after this you have something that starts when an "e"
For example: sono andata al cinema ed è stato molto bello
That is just because when you speak it's bad to listen two "e" near
