"He studieD very hard. That is how he passed the difficult test. " Even though using "hard" makes sense, I think "difficult" works better here.You can also combine the two sentences: "He studied very hard, which is why he passed the hard/difficult test."

What you could say is," He studied very hard and that's how he passed the test." ( You'll never really hear people saying the hard or difficult test in that sort of situation).

普通は、むずかしいテストとは言わないんですね。合格率が低いテストでもあえてhardとかdifficult という形容詞を付け加えるのは変なのかな…。
