someone told me when you're ape aching directly to a person in Japanese do not use the word "you" but use their name instead, is this correct? I'd so could you show me some examples?

Yes it is true because saying "you" is considered rude in Japan. Japanese uses suffixes which is a more proper way to use for a person (family) name. Unless if your close with the person than you can just say their name without suffixes
〜san used for people your age both male and female
〜sama (polite version of san used for someone older)
〜kun used for males
〜chan (informal version of san used to address children)
I'm not Japanese but this is what I've heard/learned I hope this at least helps!

Some may say it's correct but I think it's not.
For example, when you ask Aki if she likes books,
あなたは本が好きですか？
あきは本が好きですか？
Some people don't like the first one because it might sound stiff, too polite and the way teachers talk.
but I talk this way because it also sounds formal, beautiful and grammatically right.
The second one sounds friendly. No problem if you are close to Aki.
