アメリカにいたときは、漢字を使う意味（必要）がなかったので習った（勉強した）漢字を思い出すことはありませんでした。今は日本に住んでいるので日常的に漢字を使うし見ます。だから、モチベーションにもなるし、思い出しやすいです。

You said "I didn't have a reason to use it ", is it because you don't have opportunity to use it? If so, you can say 必要（ひつよう）がなかった or 使う機会（きかい）がなかった. That is more sound native.
