once you can do that, you can use your phone to type pinyin and get chinese characters

I actually think it might be easier for you to write because in the beginning, even if you think you are speaking Chinese, other Chinese people might not be able to understand you. It's safer to write down what you mean since no matter where you go in China, the Chinese characters have the same meaning. Also, listening will likely be the hardest, especially if you travel around China and do not stay in the big cities.

Writing the pinyin and choosing the characters has been the easiest for me, followed by reading. Listening has been the worst because everyone pronounces things slightly differently, and people in certain regions tend to talk very very quickly.
