Do many shops in Japan only accept cash? If so, do many Japanese people prefer it this way or do they think it is a little inconvenient?

From my experience living here I'd say some major shops like supermarkets and department stores use cards, but cash is much more reliable. Some places that do take credit cards can only accept ones from Japan. Also, the further you get from big cities the less you can use credit cards consistently.
