A carriage is the thing that you connect to other carriages (together with a locomotive) to make a train. A carriage may contain compartments.
Compartments are rare on modern trains. Mostly carriages are like planes; they have a central aisle with seats to either side. In the past you used to have a corridor along one side of a carriage with doors to compartments. A compartment contained two sets of seats facing each other with a window on one side and the door to the corridor on the other side.
