In America(In Australia and UK it might be different) sweets usually only mean candy, like Kit kat and hersheys.
Confection is a little old fashioned, i've only heard it a few times in my life when i was reading older books!! when i hear confection i think of Ice cream and pastries, like cupcakes and cakes. and there are "confection shops" but there arent "sweets shops" ..they are usually called "candy shops" instead.
hope this helps!

I think it can mean the same thing. Like there's something called confectioners sugar (or powdered sugar) I haven't personally heard it used any other way. And sweets usually just means candy or anything sweet. Like chocolate, lollipops, ice cream, and so on. But I'm not sure about other English speaking countries. :)

Yea thats true. I would say dont worry about it since confection is such an old word anyway its hardly ever used, and they basically mean the same thing.
