Please provide more context.
For example, when talking about cities or countries:
Ich komme aus Berlin.
Ich bin von Berlin nach Warschau gefahren.
Der Bürgermeister von Berlin.
Or other examples:
Er kommt jetzt aus dem Haus.
Er geht von drinnen nach draußen.
So I'd say when the two words alternatives, you'd usually use "von" only when it's followed by "nach".
