Wow great question.. I'm not too sure but I can try 😂, to act is to simply pretend to be someone else, but to perform is to be convincing, and almost extravagant.

"why are you acting so strangely?" or "you're acting like a child!" as well as "wow, they're really good at acting."
typically used to convey feeling while also able to be the verb of a performance.
as compared to
"are you going to perform at the talent show?"
which is usually in regards to an act where you are able to see a product, so it would also apply to a work scenario where your boss says "good performance this past month" :)
