I think some factors about national identity starts with the family. Each country has their own rituals, customs, beliefs or pastimes that are passed down from generation to generation, first learned from the adults in their lives. I think those things tie us into the larger group.

I think a big part of it is the existence of a stable government, and an education system put in place by that government. Personally, I don't think national identities form naturally, they require a lot of state and societal infrastructure to form.
