English is taught in schools typically starting on third grade. Other than that, a lot of people learn from watching tv and from the internet.

Actually yes I am also wondering about this. I know someone in Finland who's English isn't too good. So I want to know how other Finnish people learned English but she hasn't.😂

It's presented to us in early years, so we have alot of time to learn it. The pronouciation of the words are diffirent from our way of saying things so it might be difficult for some of us.

Plus, all the movies and US/British programs in the Finnish TV are in English (subtitles only) so I guess this is a essential part, at least for vocabulary.

@Kurousaginekochan it's a matter of personal motivation too. Our school system gives us a chance to learn, but if the person has little interest in taking it, they won't learn no matter what. Also, sometimes people can feel they are just bad at something, and because of that feel like trying to learn will be useless. I know several people who are like this, sometimes thanks to bad experiences growing up. I don't know what it's like in schools these days, but when I was young, wrong answers in class were often ridiculed by your classmates and sometimes the teachers too, and experiences like that can really kill your self esteem and make learning difficult.

Yes I think because of a bad experience growing up, so this person lost the motivation to learn English. But now she is in America so she wants to learn English quickly, but maybe its hard to catch up when you didn't want to learn in the first place.

Well I never actually studied english in school, but I watched TV shows without subtitles and played games so that's how I learned it.

In elementary school or at least in some schools we get to choose either English or German but then in high school you have to start studying English. I'm not sure if that's how it goes in all schools but that's at least the case in my school...
