I think 付ける means adding a pushing.
噛み付く is correct 噛み付ける is not correct.

@ryouru @tkhato20 I was about to edit the question and add that つける adds strength to the verb and makes it "an attack". I often see that construction in pokèmon games where all those verbs are pokèmon's moves. I thought adding つける to a verb made it lose all its figurative meanings (if it has any)→
e.g.
睨みつける (to stare) is stronger than 睨む (which also means "stare" but "guess" too) but then you cited 植えつける that I asked about in another question and in this case it works the other way around so we can't say that either.

@Crocuta Originally 付ける means "to attach ", so 植え付ける means the plant plants stably on the ground.

@Crocuta I'm not sure if adding つける makes verb "an attack". But, I feel added verb is somewhat stronger than original verb.
睨む➡睨みつける
怒鳴る(どなる, shout/yell)➡怒鳴りつける
蹴る(ける, kick O)➡蹴りつける
It doesn't necessarily mean that all verb adapt to this rule, though. Ah, and these are "and attach" rather than "to strengthen verb".
貼る(はる, stick O1 on O2)➡貼りつける
擦る(こする, rub/scrub O)➡擦りつける
塗る(ぬる, paint/color O)➡塗りつける
