May not be pronounced "nan" or "nani", but the Kanji 何 is used everywhere in questions;
- 何処 (doko) => where
- 何時 (itsu) => when
- 何故 (naze) => why
- 如何に (ikani) => how
- 何方 (donata) => who
There are equivalents in words starting with ど that are not represented with 何 like どんな, but it'll be quite difficult to get away with not using it.
