-desu is a be verb in Japanese.
This is an apple. → Koreha ringo desu.
My name is Nathan. → Watashino namaeha Nathan desu.
They are family. → Kareraha kazoku desu.
- Japanese
`Desu' is a auxiliary verb that makes the sentence sound natural.
For example,
`Watashi ha byoki desu.'
sounds more natural than
`Watashi ha byoki.'
`Desu' is used in a formal sentence.
When the sentence isn't very formal, we use `だ'
For example,
`Watashi ha byoki da'

です's not actually a verb. It's more of a verb-like word - it's the word that goes at the end if no verb is needed. The grammatical term is "copula", if you want to look that up. =)
The more formal version である IS a verb, though. =)
