@David_Wang yes it is but it’s still used commonly in spoken French when a conversation is informal. In Italian you’d use it for saying both « hi » and « bye » but that’s only used for « bye » in French. You’d never use it in formal conversations or written correspondence

I lived many years in the States where I got to know it's used quite often in common, spoken language in most part of South American countries. I also know it's known and sometime used in Spain as well. So, it doesn't surprise me too much if the French know and use it now and then.
