Question about Japanese
Just a question for anyone who knows the Shinkansen well. We had to buy two tickets, even though we had already bought one. It was confusing. So I assume one ticket was to get from the Shin-Osaka station to Kyoto, but I'm not sure what the other one is for.
We had also purchased a smaller ticket from Fukushima to Shin-Osaka

To ride Shinkansen, you have to buy a ticket of the fare and an express ticket of Shinkansen.
(An express ticket of Shinkansen doesn't contain the fare.)
So if you travel from Fukushima station to Kyoto station via Shinkansen, you have to buy two tickets:
1. A ticket of the fare from Fukushima to Kyoto (710 yen)
2. An express ticket of Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto (860 yen).
You already had the ticket from Fukushima to Shin-Osaka (160 yen), so you had to pay additional 550 yen (710-160) to extend to Kyoto, and 860 yen for an express ticket.

I guess the one is normal ticket from Shin-Oosaka to Kyoto, the other one is special express ticket.
Please check it.

Ah! Thanks mfuji! I thought it might be something like that. We were just confused cause we only needed one from Hiroshima to Osaka, but it must have been different.

If you buy a ticket of the fare and the express ticket at once, sometimes both tickets can be in a piece of ticket. Prehaps the ticket from Hiroshima to Osaka you bought was this case. Even that, you paid both the fare and the express (Shinkansen) fare.
