Do you hear a word called "Moskal" or "Moskali"?
I think it's really interesting for we also have a similar word for imperialists in East-Asia!

Yes, the first one is singular while the second one - plural. This is an insulting version of "Russian" (as a person). Came from the word "Moscovia" - the name of Russia in XV - XVIII centuries.
And it's quite a strong insult, 'cause Facebook can even ban people for that x)

@RenaisseCT Thank you very much. I'm trying to learn the history of Ukraine and Baltic States to make a comparison study with dictatorship regimes of East Asia (Where I live in) and East Europe , so messages from Ukrainians help a lot!

@RenaisseCT By the way, we have an insulting version of "Chinese" in East Asia countries (Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong) here as well as in East Europe! And the most interesting fact is that It also came from "Cina", a old name of China used by ancient India , but finally became a strong insult word for Chinese today. I'd say that two totally different cultures give a new life to a old word for the same reason...

@LegendaryTortoise I guess it's a quite common thing :) When a regular word becomes something rude. For example, there is a word for jew in Polish language and it's fine there, but the same word in Russian is a strong insult. So it's not even thing about time, but about the usage or... I dunno :) I just know that things like that happen quite often

I live in Kuban (Western Russian region), so we use 'moskali' too. Only we call this Moscow citizens only. Also there is a word 'katzapy'. Ukrainians call it all Russian people, but Kubanians call this citizens that leave in Central and Eastern part of Russia :)

In school we used to make fun saying these words after history lessons or Ukrainian literature lessons. When a person talked Russian or behave so. But no harm intended, we would laugh at ourselves and have fun with what we know about Ukrainian perspective of looking at history with Russian relations. We still do that with my nationalistic influenced friend in my uni

In past, in Ukraine that word described a Ukrainian person going to serve as a Russian Empire military. And at those times military were paid high and got free land. But going there meant you would have to forget your roots. But then this word changed a bit and became rude. We have a story from T Shevchnko "Kateryna" about a guy who promised to marry her and she lost her virginity and became pregnant. But that guy lied and enlisted and when he was a part of cavalry that were marching through her village in so or so ears she rises her hands to him riding a horse slowly and he rejects her and she dies.
And the story begins with: "make love girls but not with Moskals, because they are evil people doing evil thing to you" (there should be a better translation of this sorry for mine I cant translate poetry:( ))

I hear it too much started from 2012.
It can be bad word but it also used like joke with Russian friends.
- Country or region Ukraine
Yeah, but only as a meme. Everyone loves a good sarcastic joke, but nobody actually be talking shit about russians seriously, on the East of Ukraine at least.
