子供 is a common word for describing a child/children, whether you know them or not you can use it in general.
This is my child.
私の子供です。
A child is climbing on the tree.
子供が木に登っています。
On the other hand, 小人 is a bit special. It can only be seen on some price lists such as rail fares, or in some old literatures.
It also has another meaning, hobbit. But it can turn into a discriminative term at times so it's better to avoid in daily conversations, I think 🤔
