If it ends with い, it's an い-adjective. Otherwise, it's な.
There's only a handful of exceptions to this - きれい and きらい are the most common ones that you're going to encounter.
Also, な-adjectives, when written in kanji, tend to be written entirely in kanji, while い-adjectives have hiragana hanging off the end (cf 新しい (い) vs 元気 (な)).
Again, there's exceptions to this. きらい, again (it's 嫌い) and 好き, for example.

You have to see the form of the adjective before the noun. When い adjective modifies the noun, it will be ~い +noun. When な adjective modifies the noun, it will be ~な + noun.
