on stage means you are physically standing on a stage.
on-stage is a direction term in theater used when someone is standing offstage (behind a curtain or in one of the side wings) too move onto the stage in view of the audience.
in relation;
upstage = move to the back of the stage.
downstage = move to the front of the stage.
stage-left = move to your right on the stage.
stage-right = move to your left on the stage
