It's hard to give a definite count, because everyone hears differences closer to where they live. People from Sunderland say they do not sound like people from Newcastle, but they sound the same to me.
A lot of people put the count between 20 and 40, but it's very debatable.
The smallest number you can argue for is six, I would say.
South-East England: probably what people call a "British" accent. Examples: Harry Potter, Captain Picard, Gandalf, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Peppa Pig.

South-west England. Examples: Hagrid, Sam Gamgee
North England. Not so common on TV, but Game of Thrones uses it a bit.

Also, see the films "The Full Monty" or "Billy Elliott".
Scottish. Examples: Minerva McGonagal, Scotty, Gimli.

Welsh: Also not common on TV, but I think it shows up in The Hobbit films (Bran the Bowman). The film "The Englishman who went up a hill and came down a mountain" has a lot of Welsh accents (though as the title suggests, Hugh Grant's character sounds very English).

One of the actors in that scene is actually Colm Meany, who in reality has an Irish accent (not in the U.K., of course).

But there is the Northern Irish accent: you don't hear it much in media, but James Nesbitt is a good example (the second person to talk here: https://youtu.be/id-hAhgxI-U)

Every region and pretty much every major city has their own accent and some even more. Some of the more famous ones include the Geordie accent from the North East of England. The Glaswegian accent from Glasgow and surrounding areas in Scotland and so on!

@NathanH I got it! But there's one small mistake in my question, Nathan. I forgot that the UK was made up of several countries while I just wanted to know about England. Within England is how many accents there are. It was my mistake, I'm sorry. But you were fantastic showing me the videos because I was curious about how English sounded from countries like Ireland or Scotland! You helped a lot! Thanks, everyone! Rly, thanks.@Caryscarys81@Marlix@midnighteyes!

@AlineLeeman England probably has the most variety because it is the most cities of the countries (the other nations all have local variations too, of course).
Some comedians with different accents:
South east (posh): https://youtu.be/ttMrSCnQnnk
Liverpool (north west): https://youtu.be/JqgwO4zKKkw
Lancaster (north west) https://youtu.be/0bCLWeycGMA
Newcastle (north east): https://youtu.be/E3EYYNbdW5U (the man in black only, the others have southern accents)
South West: https://youtu.be/5Ng3fG1u4Xg
There are lots more I didn't find a good example for- West Midlands and Yorkshire being the obvious ones.
