文法的には、準体助詞「の」（ん）＋助動詞「だ」（だろ/だっ/で/に/だ/な/なら/でしょ/でし/です/ですれ）の組み合わせです。
これを文末につけると、文がより主観的になります。他人の主張よりも自分の主張を優先したり、自分の気持ちを伝えたりするときに使います。
例
私は知っている。→客観的に事実を述べている
私は知っているのだ。→他の人が思っていることに反し、自分の考えを主張している
