I am a Muslim myself living in NYC and its pretty normal. I'm not religious though.

Not really. In New York its super diverse. You can see people wearing hijabs everywhere and its normal. Don't believe everything you see on the media, they're exaggerating :)

I live in an American state called Missouri, which in more rural. I still see people in hijab and it does not bother me. The people who hate Muslims are ignorant and hateful. They are not normal.

I live in a small town in the mid-west, which is not an area known for diversity. I have met people in England when we were visiting family who I think were Muslim who were very nice, and they had an adorable little daughter.
There are a couple of Muslims who go to my school, but I haven't met them.
Overall, I feel bad for Muslims in the US, because they have to go through a lot of hate and prejudice. Islam isn't about hate or violence. I really respect Islam. All religions can be corrupted. I see this happenning in my religion (Christianity) as well, to a lesser extent.
When religions are taught correctly, the majority of the time they encourage love and compassion, not fear. This definitely applies to Islam.

The rest of the answers are correct in saying that most people will be chill about you being a Muslim, though. I think most of the hate comes through the media/ignorant jerks on the internet. The US is a big place, though. It probably depends on where you live. People in cities tend to be more open-minded, but the majority of people should be fine.
