Is it true that French people tend to be rude towards tourists who don't speak french properly? I've heard this a lot.

It can be true. Mostly with older people who can't speak English at all. They don't know how to communicate with you and they won't bother.
But if you say "Bonjour" and if you try to speak French a little I think a lot of people will be happy to help you.
Choose people between 18 and 35 years old, they aren't nicer but there is a lot more probability that they speak English, and if they are confident in their skills they will be happy to talk with you.

From experience, the people who tend to do that are the ones that have never tried to learn another language themselves. As Lucie has said, most younger people *do* have experience with this so you should be ok.
If it does happen, just remember that the problem lies with the other person, not you.

We don't like when English people take it for granted that everybody all over the world speaks English by asking directly their question in English ;)
And it depends also how the question is asked :)

Personally, from à French girl, I can say you that young generation (10 - 30 Years old) have learned English at school, and can speak English with tourists if anyone needs it. So don’t worry 🙂
