I agree with bluebubbles17 what says. It is also that "home" sounds more personal than "house", so it is more natural feeling for us to call someone elses home to a house and our own a home.

What I would say is "I'm going to stop by his place on my way home" or "On my way home, I'm going to stop by his house"
