Rape is a type of "sexual assault" usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration without consent.

@Kross9182: rape is a more blunt and emotional word. sexual assault is the word you would hear from the police, judge, statistics etc.
they are interchangeable for the most part but in my opinion "rape" is very strong and straightforward while "sexual assault" feels more formal and official. however like i said they are interchangeable and you can use whichever one you feel more comfortable saying.

@JenJenOvO: good answer also. i just want to mention that some people dont differentiate between what defines rape or sexual assault...as @Kross9182: can probably imagine it is a very complicated issue where people have alot of different reasons for using one word or the other and may also define them in their own way. hope that makes sense.
